The case for self-watering
It is a good one, and it is narrower than the marketing suggests. If your failure mode is that you forget - you go a fortnight, you notice a droop, you overcompensate - a reservoir simply removes the failure. The plant takes what it needs continuously and the swing disappears. That swing is not cosmetic: the RHS advice to water less often but more thoroughly exists because fluctuating moisture stresses roots, and a reservoir does that job better than a human with a good intention.
The second real win is time-in-absence. Not vacation absence, which needs a different set of tools, but the ordinary absence of a busy month. Going from weekly to six-weekly attention changes whether a plant survives your life.
The case for a regular pot
Three arguments, all of them real.
Diagnosis. In a plain pot with drainage, you can push a finger in and know the state of things in five seconds. In a reservoir pot, the surface tells you almost nothing about what the roots are sitting in, and the failure modes are quiet. A clogged wick with a full reservoir looks identical to a healthy system right up until the plant collapses.
Plant range. Succulents and cacti are published at once or twice a month, and continuous moisture is not what they want. Half of what people buy as forgiving houseplants falls into that group, so the pot and the plant frequently pull in opposite directions.
The overwatering habit. If you kill plants by watering too much rather than too little, a self-watering pot does not fix you - and if you keep top-watering out of habit, it makes things worse by removing the drainage headroom. Work out which of the two you actually are first, because the answer changes the purchase.
The middle option most people miss
A regular pot plus a moisture meter costs less than a self-watering planter, works with every plant including succulents, and fixes the actual root cause of most houseplant deaths, which is watering on a schedule rather than on a reading. It does not remove the need to show up, so it does not solve absence. But for the specific reader who overwaters, it is the better buy, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a planter.

What is good about it

- Are self-watering pots better than regular pots?
For tropical foliage houseplants owned by someone who forgets, yes. For succulents, for people who overwater, and for anyone who wants to be able to diagnose a problem quickly, a regular pot with drainage is better. It is a fix for a habit, not a general upgrade.
- Can you overwater a plant in a self-watering pot?
Yes, in two ways. Top-watering it as well as filling the reservoir saturates the mix and closes the air gap. And putting a succulent in one keeps the root zone moist against a plant that is published at once or twice a month.
- Do self-watering pots need drainage holes?
They need an overflow, which is the same idea. Indoors, a designed reservoir with an air gap is self-limiting because you can only fill it to the tube. Outdoors, where rain fills it for you, a drainage plug or overflow is not optional.
- What is cheaper overall, a self-watering pot or a meter?
A moisture meter, by a wide margin, and it works with every plant. It solves a different problem though: it tells you when to water, it does not water for you.
