The short answer
The volume problem, stated plainly
A fortnight for one 6-inch tropical houseplant needs 700 ml to 1.4 liters. A month needs 1.5 to 3 liters. For ten such plants, a month needs 15 to 30 liters. Those numbers eliminate almost the entire passive category immediately, and they are the reason this page is short.

The interesting result is that the humble bottle spike is competitive with the drip kit for a single plant and hopeless for ten, while the drip kit is overkill for one and the only realistic answer for ten. The decision is plant count, not trip length.
Passive versus pumped, honestly
Passive wins on reliability. A terracotta spike has nothing to fail. A ceramic Blumat cone throttles itself by soil moisture, so a cool wet fortnight does not drown anything. Nothing needs power, nothing needs a schedule, and nothing stops working because a battery died on day nine.
Pumped wins on volume and plant count. One 5-gallon reservoir serves the whole room, and the cost per plant falls as you add plants. It is also the only thing here that covers a month.
Pumped loses on failure mode. A drip kit is a pump, a timer, a manifold and twenty emitters, and every one of them can fail while you are away. Emitters clog invisibly. A tube pops off and drains the reservoir onto your floor. A cheap pump seizes. This is a real risk and the mitigation is boring: run it for a full week while you are still at home.
The point where no product is the answer
We would not tell you a passive device covers a mature outdoor container garden for two weeks in August. We would not tell you an untested pump covers a month of irreplaceable plants. And we would not tell you any of this covers a plant that needs a specific moisture regime, like a moth orchid.
At those points the honest answer is a neighbor with a key and a written note saying which plants to water and how much. It costs nothing, it handles the unexpected, and it is more reliable than anything on this page. We sell affiliate links for a living and we still think that is the right answer past a certain point.
Cut the demand before you buy
Everything on this page gets easier if the plants need less. Move them out of direct light and away from heat sources - Virginia Cooperative Extension lists both as drivers of water use. Group them so they humidify each other. Water thoroughly the morning you leave, and empty the saucers within the hour, since standing water past 60 minutes is a rot risk rather than a reserve.
And if this problem recurs - if you travel often enough that this is a standing concern - the durable fix is the plant, not the rig. Plants in the succulent cadence band are published at once or twice a month, which makes a fortnight unremarkable rather than a project.

A 6-inch tropical houseplant draws 350 ml every 3.5 to 7 days, which is 50 to 100 ml a day. The Classic's published maximum of about 75 ml a day sits inside that band, so it can keep a 6-inch pot going but cannot keep up with a thirsty 8-inch one at 114 to 229 ml a day. That is what the XL at about 150 ml a day is for. Attach a 2 liter jug and, at a real draw of 50 ml a day, that is about 40 days.

- What is the best automatic plant waterer for a month?
A drip kit with a 5-gallon reservoir. Nineteen liters across ten 6-inch tropical pots computes to roughly 19 to 38 days, and no passive device holds anything like that volume. For a single plant, a 2-liter bottle spike gets you 20 to 42 days with nothing to fail.
- Can plants survive two weeks without water?
Succulents and cacti often can - their published cadence is once or twice a month. Tropical houseplants generally cannot without cover; theirs is once or twice a week, so a fortnight is two to four missed waterings.
- Are automatic drip systems reliable enough to leave for a month?
Only after you have run one at home for a full week. The failure modes are clogged emitters, a tube that pops off and drains the tank onto the floor, and a cheap pump seizing. None of those announce themselves.
- Is it cheaper to buy a system or ask a neighbor?
A neighbor is free and handles the unexpected, which no device does. Past two weeks on plants that matter to you, or for outdoor containers in summer, we would ask the neighbor and use the device as a backup rather than the plan.
