Everything else here sells you a reservoir. This one sells you a rate, which turns out to be the number that decides whether your plant survives.

The short answer
The spec that makes this different from everything else on the site
Every other device in this category is sold on duration. A globe covers two weeks. A spike lasts ten days. Those claims are about a reservoir, and they are only meaningful if you also know how thirsty the plant is - which is why so many of them fall apart the moment you do the arithmetic.
Blumat publishes something else: a flow rate. About 75 ml per day for the Classic, about 150 ml per day for the XL. That reframes the whole question. The device is not limited by how much it holds, because it holds nothing; it is limited by how fast it can move water out of your container. Duration becomes a separate decision you make by choosing a jug.

Does 75 ml a day actually cover your plant?
This is the only question that matters, and now you can answer it. A 6-inch tropical houseplant takes about 350 ml per thorough watering, and Virginia Cooperative Extension publishes the cadence for tropical houseplants as sometimes once or twice a week. That is 350 ml every 3.5 to 7 days, or 50 to 100 ml per day. The Classic’s published 75 ml a day sits inside that band.
Now scale up. An 8-inch pot takes about 800 ml per thorough watering, which at the same cadence is 114 to 229 ml per day. The Classic’s 75 ml a day does not reach the bottom of that range. That is not a defect, it is a sizing fact, and it is exactly what the XL exists for.

That last row is worth pausing on. For a succulent published at once or twice a month, a continuous supply is not a benefit at all - it is the rot condition. A Blumat is a device for plants that want steady moisture, and which plants those are is a decision you should make before you buy the stake.
Duration is your decision, not the product’s
Because the cone only delivers what the soil pulls, the reservoir sets the calendar. At a realistic draw of around 50 ml a day, a 2 liter jug is roughly 40 days. A 5 liter container is longer still. This is the only device in our registry where extending the trip is a matter of finding a bigger bottle rather than buying a different product.
The constraint is the published 12-inch maximum lift. The reservoir has to sit no more than a foot below the cone, which in practice means a jug on the same shelf or a bucket on the floor beside a low pot, not a tank in the cupboard under the sink. Plan the geometry before you buy, because it is the part people get wrong.
Demand-driven, which is the real advantage
A ceramic cone works by vacuum. As the surrounding soil dries it pulls water through the porous ceramic; when the soil is wet the pull stops and so does the flow. That is a fundamentally different behavior from a timer, which delivers the same volume in a cool wet week as in a hot dry one.
For a plant left alone for a month, that difference is the whole game. A fixed schedule that was correct in July is an overwatering schedule in September. The symptoms of getting that wrong are the most common thing people write to us about. A demand-driven device is self-correcting in a way a programmable one is not.
The setup step that decides whether any of this happens
Blumat publishes it plainly: soak the cone and cap for at least fifteen minutes, and knock the air bubbles out under water. That is not a nicety. The siphon only forms if the ceramic and the tube are completely full of water, and a single trapped air bubble breaks the column. A Blumat that was not de-aerated properly does not underperform, it does nothing - and it does nothing silently, while you are away.
We would set the whole arrangement up a full week before travelling and watch the reservoir level actually fall. That is the only way to know the siphon took. It is the same discipline we recommend for pump-driven kits, and for the same reason: an untested device is worse than no device, because you have stopped worrying.
The honest case against it
The setup is fussy and unforgiving. Everything above is a real barrier for somebody who wanted to push a thing into soil and walk away.
The lift limit constrains where the reservoir goes. Twelve inches is not much, and a lot of tidy arrangements are ruled out by it.
It costs more per pot than a spike or a globe. If you have twelve plants, this is a different order of spend from a multipack of terracotta spikes.
Ceramic clogs in hard water. Mineral deposits build up in the pores and the flow drops. It needs periodic cleaning, which is one more thing to remember about a device you bought so you could stop remembering things.
Classic or XL?
Size it against the pot, using the table above. Under about 8 inches, the Classic; at 8 inches and above, the XL. The XL is not a longer-lasting version - both are limited by your reservoir, not by themselves - it is a faster one, and on a small pot that extra rate buys you nothing you can use.
What we would buy instead
For a few pots on a budget, unbranded terracotta spikes with a 1 liter bottle compute to roughly 10 to 20 days on a 6-inch pot and cost a fraction as much per plant. They self-throttle on the same porous-clay principle. Quality varies pack to pack, which is the trade.
For a plant you want to stop thinking about permanently, a reservoir planter is a tidier answer than a jug on the floor - the indoor planter roundup starts there.

The verdict
The Blumat Classic is the most technically honest product in this section and the one we would choose for a month away, provided you are the kind of person who will follow a setup instruction. It publishes the right number, it responds to the plant instead of to a clock, and it lets you decide the duration. It asks for fifteen minutes of care in exchange, and if you will not give it that, buy a terracotta spike and a bottle instead.

Larger floor pots that out-drink a standard Classic

The same ceramic-cone mechanism at roughly double the delivery rate, which is the version that actually covers an 8-inch pot. If you sized a Classic to a large plant and it dried out anyway, this is why.

- Are Blumats worth the money?
For a long absence, or for a plant you want on genuine autopilot, we think so - it is the only device here that publishes a flow rate and the only one that stops delivering when the soil is already wet. For a handful of plants over a single week, a terracotta spike and a bottle does the job for far less.
- Can you use a Blumat with succulents?
We would not leave one in permanently. Succulents and cacti are published at once or twice a month, so a continuous demand-driven supply is far more water than they want and constant moisture at the roots is the classic rot condition. Use one for a specific long absence, then remove it.
