XLUX T10 Soil Moisture Meter Review
The default answer in this category, and the cheapest thing on this site that changes a habit. It is also measuring something slightly different from what you think.

The short answer
What you are actually buying
Not precision. A habit. The Royal Horticultural Society is direct about the underlying mistake: avoid a routine such as watering once a week, and instead water less often but more thoroughly, letting the surface dry before watering again. Nearly every dead houseplant is a schedule that outlived its accuracy.
A meter makes the check trivial enough that you actually do it. That is the whole product. It happens to solve a second, physical problem at the same time: the top inch of a pot dries first and fastest, so the surface is a poor proxy for the root zone. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends pushing a finger one to three inches into the mix depending on container size, which is fine for a 4-inch pot and impossible for a 12-inch one.

Three of those rows are the reason it wins its category.
Seven inches of probe. This is the specification that decides whether a reading means anything. A probe that only samples the top two inches reads the fastest-drying part of the pot and will tell you to water while the root zone is still wet - which is how a meter can actively make overwatering worse. Seven inches reaches the middle of a 6-inch pot.
No battery. This is a device you use twice a month, which is exactly the usage pattern that finds a flat battery. An analog probe generates a small current in moist soil and moves the needle with it. There is nothing to go flat and nothing to replace.
A single probe. Less root disturbance per insertion than a two-prong design, which matters if you are checking the same pot every week.
The limitation, stated plainly
XLUX does not publish an accuracy figure or a calibration method. Neither does anybody else in this category, including the digital meters that display a decimal place. We went looking across the category and there is no traceable standard behind any of the numbers.
What these devices measure is electrical conductivity between the probe and the soil. Conductivity correlates with moisture, but it also responds to dissolved salts. Heavily fertilized mix reads wetter than it is. Very pure water in a low-salt mix reads drier. Neither effect makes the tool useless, and both mean you should read the value as a comparison against the same pot last week rather than as a fact about water content. This is why the banded dial is a feature rather than a cheapening. DRY, MOIST and WET is an honest resolution for the measurement underneath it. A number to one decimal place answers a question the sensor cannot actually answer.
How to use it so the reading means something
Insert slowly to about two thirds of the pot depth, near the root ball rather than against the pot wall, and read after a few seconds. Take the reading in the same spot each time, so week-to-week comparison is like for like. Wipe the probe dry afterward and do not store it in the soil - a permanently buried probe corrodes and drifts.
Then act on it. Most houseplants want the upper portion of the mix to dry before the next watering, so you are waiting for the reading to move from moist into dry, not to bone dry. When you do water, water thoroughly: Virginia Cooperative Extension is explicit that the mix should be wet all the way through and the container drained until it stops dripping. A meter changes when. The honest case against it
You may not need one. Three plants in 4-inch and 5-inch pots and a working finger is a complete solution, and it is the solution extension guidance actually recommends. A meter earns its place when the pots are deep enough that your finger cannot reach the middle, when there are enough plants that you cannot track them, or when a plant is already in trouble and you need to know quickly which problem it has.
The scale is relative, not calibrated. Two meters can disagree, and the same meter reads differently in a heavily fertilized pot. Treat the number as a comparison, never as a measurement.
One reading per insertion. Pots are not uniform, and a single probe samples one spot. If a reading surprises you, take a second one somewhere else in the pot before you act on it.
It will not survive being left in the pot. Which is exactly what a lot of people do with it.
How it compares to the alternatives
The 3-in-1 analog meter adds light and pH needles for barely more money. The light meter is genuinely useful for working out whether a corner is as bright as you think it is. The pH function on a two-electrode probe of this type has no published accuracy or calibration method, and we would not make a decision on it. Buy it for the light reading, ignore the pH scale, and it is a good purchase.
The digital meters add a backlit numeric display and a battery. The backlight is a real advantage in a dim corner. The extra decimal place is false precision, because it is the same conductivity reading underneath. The full analog-versus-digital comparison goes through this properly.
Long-probe garden meters are a different tool for a different job. A 24-inch probe in an 8-inch pot reads the bottom of the pot and the saucer. Use those outdoors, where the surface genuinely lies to you.
The verdict
The XLUX T10 is the right default: it has the probe length that makes a reading meaningful, no battery to fail, and a display honest about its own resolution. Nothing in this category is a precision instrument and the T10 does not pretend to be. Buy it if your pots are deep enough that guessing is genuinely hard - and if they are not, keep the money and use your finger.

What is good about it

Skip this one if
Skip it if you have three plants and a finger. Virginia Tech's own guidance is to push a finger 1 to 3 inches into the mix and check, and for small pots that is genuinely as good. Buy a meter when the pots are deep enough that your finger cannot reach the root zone.

The three-dial version that shows up first in every search. The moisture needle works on the same principle as a single-function meter. The pH needle on a cheap probe of this type is the part to distrust.

Reading a pot in a dark corner, or wanting a number to track over time

A battery-powered probe with a numeric readout instead of a needle. The number looks more precise than the analog dial and is measuring exactly the same thing, which is worth knowing before you pay extra for it.

- Is the XLUX T10 accurate?
It is repeatable rather than accurate, and that distinction matters. XLUX publishes no accuracy figure or calibration standard, and neither does any other meter in this category. The device reads electrical conductivity, which tracks moisture but is also affected by dissolved salts. Use it to compare the same pot week to week, not as a statement about water content.
- Does the XLUX T10 need batteries?
No. XLUX publishes it as requiring no power: the probe generates its own small current in moist soil and that moves the needle. For a device used twice a month, that is a genuine advantage over a battery-powered digital meter.
- How deep should I push the XLUX T10 probe?
About two thirds of the pot depth, near the root ball rather than against the pot wall. The top inch dries first and fastest, so a shallow reading will have you watering a pot whose root zone is still wet.
- Can you leave the XLUX T10 in the soil permanently?
No. Wipe the probe dry after each reading and store it out of the pot. A probe left buried corrodes, and a corroded probe drifts - which turns your only feedback device into a source of confident wrong answers.
- XLUX T10 or a 3-in-1 meter?
The T10 if you only want the moisture reading, because a single banded dial is easier to read at a glance. The 3-in-1 if you also want the light meter, which is genuinely useful. Do not buy the 3-in-1 for the pH function - no listing in that category publishes an accuracy figure or a calibration method for it.
