Why the decimal place is a problem
A display reading 4.7 looks like a measurement. It is a conversion of the same uncalibrated conductivity signal the analog needle responds to, rendered with a resolution the underlying sensing does not support. Nothing in the category publishes an accuracy figure, so there is no basis for the tenth.
That matters practically, not just philosophically. A number invites comparison between pots, between meters and between weeks, and the signal is not stable enough to support any of that. Conductivity responds to dissolved salts as well as water, so a recently fertilized pot reads higher, and Virginia Cooperative Extension’s own leaching-fraction work exists precisely because salt accumulation in containers is a real and variable thing.
The banded analog dial is more honest about what it knows. It says dry, moist or wet, which is exactly the resolution of the decision you are making.
Where digital genuinely wins
A dark corner. If the plant lives somewhere you have to squint, the backlight is a real benefit and there is no analog equivalent.
Tracking a specific plant over time. If you are nursing a plant back from a root-rot problem and want a written record of whether the mix is drying at all, a repeatable number in a notebook is easier than remembering needle positions. Use it as a trend, not a value.
Soil temperature. Some digital units add it, and it is a real input - temperature is one of the factors extension guidance lists as changing water use. Not worth buying for on its own, but a genuine bonus.
Where analog wins, which is most of the time
No battery is the big one. This is a device you use once or twice a month, kept in a drawer or a plant pot, and the failure mode of a battery device on that schedule is a flat battery at the moment you need it. An analog probe generates its own signal from the electrochemical reaction in moist soil and works indefinitely.
The banded dial is the second. It answers the question - water or do not - and declines to imply more. In a category with no published accuracy anywhere, an instrument that overstates its own resolution is the wrong instrument.

What is good about it
- No batteries means it works the day you dig it out of a drawer eighteen months later
- A 7-inch probe reaches the middle of a 6-inch pot, which is where the answer actually is
- The banded dial answers the only question you have, water or do not, without pretending to a percentage it cannot deliver
- Cheap enough to buy two and leave one in the room with the plants
What is not
- It reads conductivity, not water content, so heavily fertilized soil reads wetter than it is
- The 1-to-10 scale is relative, not calibrated to any standard, so two meters can disagree
- Single probe means one reading per insertion, and pots are not uniform
Skip this one if
Skip it if you have three plants and a finger. Virginia Tech's own guidance is to push a finger 1 to 3 inches into the mix and check, and for small pots that is genuinely as good. Buy a meter when the pots are deep enough that your finger cannot reach the root zone.

- Are digital soil moisture meters more accurate than analog?
No. Both measure electrical conductivity, and neither publishes a calibration standard or accuracy figure. The digital display shows more decimal places, not more accuracy.
- Do analog moisture meters need batteries?
No. The probe generates a small current in moist soil that moves the needle directly. For a device used twice a month, that is a meaningful advantage over a battery-powered one.
- Why does my moisture meter read differently in two pots?
Different mixes, different salt content and different probe contact all change the conductivity reading. Compare a pot against itself over time rather than one pot against another.
- Which should I buy for a dark room?
Digital, for the backlight. That is the one case where it is clearly the better purchase. Everywhere else the analog probe measures the same thing without a battery.
