EarthBox Original Review
EarthBox publishes more about its planters than anyone else in this category. That is most of why we recommend it, and it is also how we can show you where two of its own claims stop holding up.

The short answer
Why this one gets a page of its own
Because of the table. Almost every sub-irrigated planter sold online describes a reservoir and never says how big it is, which makes every duration claim in the category unfalsifiable. EarthBox publishes reservoir capacity, growing media volume and external dimensions for all three of its systems side by side, in public, in one place.
That is the single most useful thing any manufacturer in this category does, and it is the reason EarthBox scores well here regardless of the fact that the product is a rectangular plastic box that looks like a rectangular plastic box. A published number is something you can argue with. A promise is not.

The fourth row is ours, not EarthBox’s - it is just the first row divided by the second - and it is the row that decides which box you want. The Original carries fifty percent more water per unit of soil than the Root and Veg does. Both are correct designs; they are solving different problems, and it takes a published table to see that at all.
EarthBox also publishes the material and construction details: food-safe, BPA-free polypropylene, made in the USA, infused with UV blockers to resist fading and embrittlement, and recyclable as number 5 polypropylene resin. The growing media is published as re-usable for eight to ten growing seasons. For a product that lives outdoors in full sun, the UV note is not marketing filler - it is the difference between a box that lasts and a box that goes chalky.
Why we do not publish a refill interval for this box
Everywhere else on this site we divide a published reservoir by the volume of one thorough watering and multiply by the watering cadence Virginia Cooperative Extension publishes. That gives the refill interval that is the whole point of our method.
We deliberately do not do it here, and the reason matters. The published cadence bands are for container houseplants indoors. An outdoor tomato in July transpires several times as much and varies day to day with the weather. Running our arithmetic on this box would produce a confident-looking number that flatters the product and misleads you, so the product card for the Original carries no computed interval at all. In hot weather, expect to top it up daily.
That is not a criticism of EarthBox. It is a limit of our own method, stated where it applies, and it is why watering a vegetable garden while you are away is ranked on delivery rate and reservoir size instead.
The first claim we will not repeat: “without risk of overwatering”
EarthBox describes its systems as sub-irrigated planters in which plants draw water from the bottom reservoir by capillary action, and states that plants are kept optimally watered without risk of overwatering.
The mechanism is exactly right, and the design does genuinely reduce the risk. A reservoir under an aeration screen keeps a physical clearance between standing water and the root zone, and the reversible mulch cover keeps rain out of the mix so the reservoir stays the thing that controls watering. That is a real advantage outdoors, where an open reservoir planter fills from above in a wet week.
But without risk is an absolute, and absolutes are the one thing a published spec sheet cannot support. NC State Extension names the organisms responsible for root rot - Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia and Fusarium - and the condition they need is wet, poorly drained soil. A sub-irrigated planter creates that condition readily enough if you top-water it as well as filling the reservoir, if you fill past the designed level, or if you use a mix too dense to move water. All three usage errors are set out here, and the first is by far the most common.
The honest version of the claim is: used as designed, with an appropriate mix and filled only at the tube, this is a low rot risk and probably lower than a conventional pot. That is a good thing to be able to say about a planter. It is simply not the same sentence.
The second claim: “double the yields”
EarthBox’s comparison table states that the Original produces double the yields of conventional gardening using less fertilizer, less water and less effort.
We are not going to repeat that as a fact, because no methodology is published alongside it. Doubled against what conventional baseline - garden soil, a plain container, which crop, which season, watered how? Without those controls named, the number is not checkable, and an unfalsifiable claim is exactly the kind of thing this site exists to not pass along.
What is defensible, and probably underlies it, is unremarkable horticulture: consistent moisture at the root zone, a mulch cover that suppresses evaporation and weeds, and a pre-measured fertilizer strip do produce better container yields than erratic hand-watering in an ordinary pot. You can believe all of that without believing a specific multiple.
What the box actually costs to get growing
This is the most useful thing on this page for a buyer, and it is easy to miss. The headline configuration is the box and its hardware. EarthBox publishes the contents plainly: the planter, one aeration screen, one water fill tube, two reversible black-and-white mulch covers and an instruction manual.
Everything the box needs in order to actually grow something is a separate, priced option: the two cubic feet of organic potting mix, the pre-measured fertilizer and dolomite, and the casters. So the number you first see is the floor, not the price. Configure it the way most first-time buyers will want it - box, mix, nutrients, wheels - and it lands in a meaningfully higher bracket than the one that caught your eye.
Two details worth knowing before you click. The fertilizer comes in two published formulations, a standard 7-7-7 that EarthBox recommends for fruiting and root crops and a natural 8-3-5 it recommends only for leafy crops - so the right choice depends on what you are growing, not on which is nicer. And the casters are custom-sized to the box: EarthBox states plainly that standard casters will not fit. If you want the box to be movable, that is a decision to make at purchase.
None of that is a reason not to buy it. It is a reason to budget for it. The same arithmetic applies to any sub-irrigated planter - two cubic feet of mix is a real cost on top of any box this size - it is just that EarthBox is unusually explicit about the line items.
What it is genuinely excellent at
Fruiting crops in containers. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers. The 1.50 gallons of reservoir per cubic foot of media is the highest ratio EarthBox sells, and fruiting crops have the highest and least forgiving water demand of anything you would put in a container.
Keeping rain out of the equation. The mulch cover is the detail that separates this from a generic reservoir planter left outdoors. It keeps the top of the mix from being watered by the weather, which is what preserves the air gap that keeps roots out of standing water. Why a cover, plug or overflow is not optional outdoors is worth reading before you buy any reservoir planter for a patio.
Companion planting. EarthBox lists the Original, and only the Original, as suitable for combining crops - tomatoes with peppers, eggplant with tomatoes, zucchini with summer squash, peas with green onions. If you are growing on a balcony where you get one box, that flexibility is worth something real.
Lasting. Published as reusable for decades, with the media good for eight to ten seasons and a replant kit of new fertilizer, dolomite and a mulch cover between rounds. Amortized over that, the cost argument looks different from the way it looks at checkout.
The honest case against it
It looks like equipment. A long rectangular plastic box is a growing system, not decor. Indoors it will look like what it is - and EarthBox notes you would also need a tray under the Original or Root and Veg to grow inside, plus appropriate grow lights.
It is not a vacation solution and it is often bought as one. A three-gallon reservoir is a serious buffer against a missed day. It is not a fortnight, and in a hot week it is not even a weekend for a mature tomato.
Vining crops need more kit. EarthBox is clear that tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, summer squash and melons need a staking or trellis system, sold separately, and made for the Original and the Root and Veg but not the Junior.
The two claims above. A company this transparent about its numbers does not need an unqualified overwatering claim or an uncontrolled yield multiple, and both slightly undercut the trust that the published table earns.
Original, Root and Veg, or Junior?
Original for fruiting crops and for anyone who wants one box to do the most. Best reservoir-to-soil ratio, the only one listed for companion planting, and the widest published crop list.
Root and Veg when depth is the constraint rather than water. EarthBox recommends it specifically for larger root crops - beets, carrots, onions, parsnips, rutabagas, jicama - because of its greater depth. Note it holds the same two cubic feet of mix on a third less reservoir, so it is the depth box, not the thirsty-crop box. Its square footprint also suits a balcony corner better than the long Original.
Junior for herbs and greens, which is what EarthBox designed it for, and for a windowsill or a narrow rail where the Original will not physically go. A cubic foot of mix will not carry a tomato through a hot week, and it is not offered with a trellis, so do not buy it for fruiting crops. The verdict
The EarthBox Original is the sub-irrigated planter we would buy for container vegetables, and the published spec table is most of the reason. It gives you the numbers to check the purchase before you make it, which almost nothing else in this category does, and the design details that matter outdoors - the aeration screen, the mulch cover, the UV-stabilized body - are all real.
Buy it as a better container, not as a way to leave. And treat the two marketing claims the way we do: as the least evidenced sentences on an otherwise unusually honest page.
