Watering a Vegetable Garden While You Are Away
The hardest version of this problem. Summer demand is high, unpredictable and weather-driven, and most of the category was designed for a houseplant on a shelf.

The short answer
What makes a vegetable garden different
Three things, and each one breaks a different part of the standard advice.
Demand is high and weather-driven. A houseplant’s draw is roughly stable. A tomato in fruit on a hot week can want several times what it wanted on a cool one. A fixed-schedule device delivers the same amount either way, which means you are choosing between under-watering in the heat and over-watering in the rain.
The volumes are large. Our indoor pot-size figures top out around 800 ml per thorough watering of an 8-inch pot. A large patio container or a bed section is well beyond that, so a reservoir sized for a windowsill is irrelevant here. This is the one part of the site where a five-gallon bucket is a sensible unit.
Rain interferes. Outdoors, a reservoir planter can fill from above during a wet week, and the air gap that keeps roots out of standing water disappears without anybody doing anything wrong. That is why a drainage plug, an overflow or a mulch cover is not optional outdoors - we go through which planters have which.
How we ranked them
Delivery rate first. For a vegetable, the binding constraint is usually not how much the device holds, it is how fast it can move water. A stake that publishes 150 ml a day tells you something a bulb that publishes nothing never will.
Reservoir size second. Once the rate is adequate, duration is simply the tank divided by the daily draw. Devices where you supply the reservoir score well here, because you can scale it to the trip rather than to the packaging.
Behavior in a wet week third. Demand-driven devices - ceramic cones, capillary systems, sub-irrigation - stop delivering when the soil is already wet. Timer-driven pumps do not. That difference matters more outdoors than anywhere else on this site.

Why the Blumat XL wins this one
It is the only device in our registry that publishes a flow rate rather than a duration, and for an outdoor crop that is the more useful number by a distance. A duration claim assumes a plant; a flow rate is a property of the device, and you can check it against your own plant.
The XL publishes about 150 ml per day, roughly double the standard Classic. It works by ceramic cone: as the soil dries it creates a vacuum that pulls water from your reservoir, and when the soil is wet the flow stops. That is the behavior you want in a week that might be 90 degrees or might be a thunderstorm.
The honest limits are real. The published maximum lift is 12 inches, so the reservoir has to sit no more than a foot below the cone, which constrains where you can put a bucket on a patio. Setup is fussy - the cone has to be soaked and de-aerated under water or it will not siphon at all, and a Blumat that was not de-aerated properly does nothing while you are away. And 150 ml a day is a real ceiling: a mature tomato in a heatwave can want considerably more than that, in which case you are looking at more than one stake per plant. The pump kit, and the reliability question nobody wants to hear
A USB pump kit with 1/4 inch tubing and per-pot emitters is the cheapest way to cover 15 or 20 containers at once, and because you supply the reservoir you can scale duration to the trip. Ten 6-inch pots off a 19 liter bucket at 350 ml per watering is 5.4 waterings each, which is weeks rather than days. Many models carry AA battery backup, so a power cut does not silently end the schedule.
Now the part the listings do not lead with. Small pumps in this price bracket are the least reliable component in the whole category, emitters clog, and a clogged emitter is invisible until you get home. The schedule is fixed, so a cool wet week gets the same water as a hot dry one. We would not travel on one of these without running it for a full week first and watching every emitter actually drip. An untested pump is worse than no pump, because you have stopped worrying about the plants.
The EarthBox, and the claim we will not repeat

It is still not a vacation device. EarthBox’s own numbers make that clear once you put them next to summer demand: in hot weather these want topping up daily. It is a labor saver and a yield improver, not a two-week absence solution, and we would rather say that than sell you the upgrade. Terracotta spikes for a handful of pots
If the whole problem is four tomato pots on a patio, unbranded terracotta spikes with a bottle screwed on are the cheapest thing that genuinely works. Capacity is whatever bottle you use, which is a number you control rather than a mystery, and the porous clay self-throttles: it releases water as the surrounding soil dries rather than on a schedule.
Two cautions. Quality varies pack to pack and some spikes are fired too dense to release water usefully, so test them a week ahead. And the arithmetic scales badly upward - a 1 liter bottle covers roughly 10 to 20 days on a 6-inch indoor pot, but a large outdoor container in July is a completely different draw. The three things that cost nothing and help most
Mulch. A layer of mulch on the surface of a bed or a large container cuts evaporation, which is the part of the water budget that goes nowhere near the plant. Nothing on this page delivers as much benefit per dollar.
Move containers into shade. Demand tracks sun and heat. Pulling pots out of full afternoon sun for a week costs you nothing and can nearly halve the draw.
Harvest and prune before you go. Fewer fruit and less leaf area means less transpiration. Picking everything ripe on the morning you leave is both a smaller water bill and a smaller pile of spoiled produce when you return. The full pre-trip demand-cutting list is here.
What we would actually do for two weeks in July
Combine, rather than pick. Blumat XL stakes on the large containers with the biggest reservoir that fits within the 12-inch lift, a pump kit on the smaller pots with a bucket, mulch everywhere, everything movable pulled into part shade, and somebody with a key who will look once in the middle. The honest answer to “how do I water a vegetable garden for two weeks in high summer” still includes a human being. An 8-inch tropical houseplant draws 800 ml every 3.5 to 7 days, which is 114 to 229 ml a day. The XL's published rate of about 150 ml a day sits inside that band. The Classic's 75 ml a day does not.

Questions people actually ask
- How do I water a vegetable garden while on vacation?
For containers and beds, ceramic-cone stakes with a large reservoir are the best single device, because they publish a delivery rate and stop flowing when the soil is wet. For a lot of pots, a timer-driven pump kit with a bucket you supply covers more plants for less. Add mulch and move containers into shade, and for anything past about a week, arrange for someone to check.
- How long can tomatoes go without water in summer?
We will not give you a number, because we do not have a defensible one. The published watering bands we use throughout this site are for container houseplants indoors, and an outdoor fruiting tomato in high summer transpires several times as much and varies day to day with the weather. Anyone quoting you a confident figure is guessing.
- Do self-watering planters work for vegetables?
They work well as growing containers - a sub-irrigated planter with a three gallon reservoir gives a fruiting crop a real buffer and keeps watering consistent. They are not vacation devices. In hot weather they still want topping up daily, so treat them as a way to grow better rather than a way to leave for a fortnight.
- Is a drip timer or a ceramic stake better for a vegetable garden?
A ceramic stake is better behaved because it is demand-driven: it delivers when the soil is dry and stops when it is wet, which matters a lot outdoors where the weather changes. A timer kit covers far more plants per dollar but waters on a fixed schedule regardless of rain, and its pump and emitters are the least reliable parts in the category.
- Will mulch really make a difference while I am away?
Yes, and it is the cheapest intervention on this page. Mulch reduces evaporation from the soil surface, which is water that never reaches the plant at all. Combined with moving containers out of full afternoon sun, it can cut the draw enough to bring a trip inside what your device can actually deliver.
